This page contains a bit about myself both professionally and personally. Since I will be spending so much time with your child I always like to tell my student's parents a little bit about myself. Our children are the most amazing miracles and having children myself, I know how precious and important they are to us. I believe each child learns at their own pace and what may be one student's personal best may not be another's. I really enjoy teaching and seeing kids succeed. Getting to know my students and seeing them learn new things and becoming inspired is what makes me get up each day and truly enjoy my job.
Experience
Before I began teaching I was a substitute teacher for grades k-12 for three years. I student taught 3rd grade and spent my first year teaching fifth grade Communication Arts at Peculiar Elementary. This fall will be my 18th year teaching! When Eagle Glen opened in 2002, I moved schools and have taught 6th grade there until May 2017. When they turned Eagle Glen into an elementary school I moved to South middle school and started teaching 6th grade Reading and 7th grade Academic Skills. I've served on a curriculum committee helping to write and develop quality and meaningful curriculum for 6 years. I was on the Building Leadership Team (BLT) for four years, and I'm on my fourth year as a Team Ray-Pec representative.
My two children are COMPLETE opposites, so I can certainly relate to those students who are perfectionists as well as those who would really rather be doing ANYTHING else except school work. Thank goodness they are now 27 and 25. We all survived lol. I've been on the Special Education team for 13 yrs. I've also had LEAP students for a number of years.
Education
I believe it's important for educators to continue evolving, changing, and growing every year. I try to keep up on new and innovative ways of teaching, My formal education includes a Bachelors in Education with an emphasis in reading for K-6, and a Masters in Curriculum & Instruction. I received both degrees from Graceland University.
Family
I have a wonderful and supportive family at home. I've been married for 29 years to a pretty amazing guy and we have been blessed with two amazing kids--well, their not really kids anymore. My son, Calvin, is 27 yrs. old and is getting his Computer Soft degree and my daughter, Megan, is 25 yrs. old and is a Mizzou graduate which of course means we're obligated to being big Mizzou fans--Roarrr!!!!! M-I-Z.......Z-O-U!!! She now lives in the windy city of Chicago and loves it. .
I've lived in Missouri most of my life. After I was married I lived in Hawaii on a Navy base for two years where my son was born, and lived in Wichita for one year where my daughter was born. My family is my life and I feel blessed everyday that God gave me the gift of having them in my life. Outside of school we love traveling, going to movies, and spending time with family and friends.
Inside Room 702
I LOVE having an active and engaging classroom. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see my students having a great time learning. I never promise my students that they will love learning everyday, but I do promise that learning will be actively engaging. My students will talk, discuss, explore, and become inspired. Throughout the year your student will have a variety of different learning experiences. Both Social Studies and Science will be very different from anything they've had in the past, which will be a challenge for them.
